How does the scoring work?
Dressage - the percentage you have is taken from 100 to produce the lowest score to carry forward ( for example if you score 70%, your dressage score would be 30 penalties to carry forward)
Show jumping - penalties issued for knockdowns / disobedience / crossing tracks - error on course etc) - this is not timed. If you jump clear you have no penalties to carry forward. If you have for example, 4 faults for a pole down then it would be 4 faults to add to your 30 dressage score. (34)

XC - 20 faults are applied for xc stops/ error on course. 10 pts are added for a knock down. There is a timed section required to enable us to place riders who end on the same penalty - this is a marked section - not the entire course. ( Why have a timed section? for example - riders who had 40 dressage score with the same collective marks, and a clear XC and clear show jump round would both end up coming first - and this does happen.)
The timed section in the xc is based on the fastest rider, in the event of a tie on other scores the fastest time would have a higher placing.

BE events also run a timed element and that is usually an optimum time, where you need to cover a certain amount of metres per minute or you are penalised with time faults. This also gives the ability to differentiate between riders on the same score and collective marks. We do not run an optimum time, instead we opt for a fastest timed section. This gives riders the ability to ride with less pressure to keep at a certain pace the whole way round, giving horses a break, and allowing green horses / inexperienced horses / riders who need a confidence boost to take their cross country part at a pace they are happy with. Whilst the timing of the timed section will still apply, riders can choose how fast they wish to ride that element of the course.

Please be aware of the scoring before entry.
